Do I really need a professional photographer for my modeling portfolio?
In a world of digital everything you might ask yourself why do I need a modeling portfolio? Over the course of my career as a professional photographer I have worked with everyone from brides to lawyers. As an up and coming model, you need a remarkable modeling portfolio to jump-start your career. Your modeling portfolio is your first impression on agencies and clients and it has to stand out above the rest. It’s essential to explore every option when putting together your modeling portfolio. It’s not only about taking great photos there’s a lot more planning that goes into it. For starters you need to decide what type of model you want to be. While pursuing your dream, you need to be mindful of the typecasts that are a huge part of the industry. Typically, your size and height would be the main deciding factor when it came to the type of jobs you were booked for as most clients have a pre-conceived idea of what they feel is the proper, “type”. For example, it’s sometimes difficult for short or petite up and coming models to break into fashion modeling. Not that these stereotypes aren’t being throw out the window on a daily basis but it just helps to know what your goal is when you are creating your portfolio. For example, as a casual model you would need variations in your photographs, but as a high fashion model, you would need to focus on high fashion images. Your modeling portfolio is your brand; every picture tells a story and whether it’s for your first modeling portfolio, or you are adding updated images, it is meant to represent who you truly are. My amazing studio (located in Braintree, MA) is the perfect place to have your modeling portrait photography done.
People often ask themselves, What’s in a modeling portfolio? The answer is your appearance, your brand, your style, your age range, your professionalism, your personality traits and your inner emotional life. I know that is a lot of pressure to put on one picture but that’s why getting your portrait done professionally is so important. I will take care of everything for you.
So let’s make the best first impression possible! As Malcolm Gladwell said in the book Blink, “The adaptive unconscious does an excellent job of sizing up the world, warning people of danger, setting goals, and initiating action in a sophisticated and efficient manner.” As your portrait and fashion photographer I slow down these “micro moments” and fine-tune what’s best in your face posture, attitude, mood and goal. If you’re trying to look powerful and sexy, there are certain muscles that need to be activated in your face / body / posture and there are certain ways you must sit or stand. If you want to look dramatic and intimidating for a movie role, I would pose you completely different. It’s important that you are “genuine” in your photos. I am relentless in my pursuit of giving you exactly what you want when you come to my studio just outside of Boston MA. You are not allowed to leave until you are 100% blown away. I’m going to capture you in the best light, at the right angle and with the perfect expression that embodies your personality. You don’t just choose a professional model photographer for the quality of their images; you choose them because the photos will change your life. Make the right choice; choose Giovanni The Photographer!
How do I book a model / fashion photographer?
Once I speak to someone on the phone or via e-mail and we decide that we are a good fit for one another I know that I am being hired for my expertise. I choose the backdrop for your photo based on the story you are trying to tell. I have over forty different color backdrops to choose from to perfectly accentuate your outfit, skin tone, hair and eye color. For example, if you walk in with a blue shirt on, my immediate thought process is to compliment the blue with hazel (amber, green and brown hues). If you choose to wear your favorite purple shirt then I would complement it with a yellow background. I am an expert in color design. I am constantly trying to accentuate my photos using triadic and complementary colors.
For over ten years I have been perfecting my craft and part of this is because I am able to truly make my clients feel comfortable and I have the ability to bring out their confidence while capturing their portraits. I always want to make my clients look friendly and approachable if that is your goal. Sometimes, it’s the things that I say to you in conversation during your shoot to get you to make those warm spur-of-the-moment expressions.
Your modeling portfolio is a part of your overall package. In most cases, it’s the front page. Let’s face it, before you even walk into an audition or casting it’s your modeling portfolio that got you there and it needs to be incredible.
What’s the process?
I am reachable twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week (open 24/7). You can call, email or text me directly and we will schedule a modeling portrait session. I encourage my clients to send me pictures of their outfits / wardrobe before the shoot so I can determine the ideal background and lighting choices.
I will also provide suggestions. For woman, I always recommend heavy natural makeup as it photographs amazingly. For men, I suggest moisturizing really well. I also recommend bringing your brush, comb, lint brush, moisturizer, etc. I do have these items available in my studio but sometimes people are weirded out by the idea of sharing products with others.
On the day of the shoot, I will confirm your desires for the shoot and share my creative ideas with you. Then, I will inspect your clothing closely to ensure that it is lint free and your collar is down properly. I will also ensure that your hair is still in the right position and your makeup isn’t smeared.
From there, I create a lighting profile based on what you are going for, your skin tone, and your outfit. I can add dramatic effects if you are looking for a more powerful image by using split lighting. If you are looking for something less dramatic I may opt to go with clamshell lighting. I have an arsenal of different lighting schemes including Rembrandt lighting, loop lighting, back lighting, three point lighting, overhead lighting, and broad lighting. I also utilize lighting modifiers such as beauty dishes, large soft boxes, massive scrims, 7 foot umbrellas, parabolic umbrellas, five in one reflectors, snoots, strobes, speed Lights, and hot lights.
My goal is never to go with a cookie cutter approach; I customize each session to compliment you and what you are looking for. Once we select the perfect lighting profile, the next step is to go over posing techniques. Double chins and wrinkles are easily corrected with a technique called, “turtling”. By turtling or simply bringing your chin and forehead forward, you will look more attractive. Once we have discussed and practiced posing, we can start taking photos. I will take ten to twenty photos with the goal to bring out the best in you. While I am doing this you can see each individual photo as it is taken on my 4k 70-inch screen. Because so much preparation has gone into posing and setting up the perfect lighting and backdrop we can usually find winners within this set however, if we do not then together we figure out what the missing attribute is and then we apply it to the next set of ten to twenty photos.
Once we select the winning photos, you have the option to have the photo professionally retouched. I can remove blemishes, scars, wrinkles, bags under your eyes, hairline defects, and even out skin tone in Adobe Photoshop. I can even make your face look slimmer, whatever your insecurity is; I can work my magic in Photoshop to make you look your absolute best! Once edited, the photos are delivered via email or Dropbox in a timely manner.
I’m so grateful that you have decided to check out my work. I look forward to setting up a model session with you and capturing amazing photographs.
